Two Powder Room Paint Color Trends to Try in 2022

You can go glam or grounded, say our experts.

Few spaces in your home offer as much room for design creativity as the powder room, where the small size, limited number of finishings, and out-of-the-way location make it a prime spot for testing out your most exciting décor ideas. For some, it provides a perfect opportunity to incorporate peel-and-stick wallpaper in an eye-catching, oversized design; for others, splurge-worthy tile or other wall treatments get their moment to shine. "The smaller size of a powder room lends itself to experimentation," says Annie Sloan, paint and color expert and creator of Chalk Paint, "and choices which would overwhelm in social spaces become witty, charming and friendly. Go bold or go home!" Ahead, two paint trends to bookmark in the new year.

Glam Pink with a Twist

In 2022, suggests Sloan, bid farewell to your current powder room décor and give it a stunning makeover by testing out the trend of color drenching: Taking a single color and incorporating different tones and shades of it throughout your space, on everything from the walls to the accessories (Elizabeth Lawson did so here, in the above salmon-hued jewel box). "Color drenching is a really exciting new interiors trend, and a powder room is a really easy space in which to experiment with bolder design choices," says Sloan. "Pick a surprising shade—something statement-worthy and joyful, such as Capri Pink—to empower and suggest the fun glamour of a restaurant or hotel bathroom (one of the communal spaces I've really missed recently!). Paint walls, furnishings, lamp fittings, and picture frames in similar shades, then sit back and bask in compliments!"

Teal Tones

If a less dramatic makeover is more your style, Erika Woelfel, vice-president of color and creative services at Behr, recommends incorporating this year's most popular green-and-blue shades into your space. "Our trends palette [is] a combination of neutral tones that are complemented by an unexpected pop of color," she says. "Cool color tones have been on the rise this year for bathroom spaces and will continue to be popular." Her favorite combination: seaglass-toned Breezeway, Behr's Color of the Year for 2022, alongside pale Etched Glass, light blue After Rain, and deep teal Ocean Abyss. These cool-toned blues and greens create a sense of restoration and relaxation in even the smallest bathroom, turning a quick trip to powder your nose into a calming moment of zen.
