For a fresh, healthy start to the day or a refreshing pick-me-up, try this blueberry banana smoothie. Get out your blender because this smoothie couldn't be easier or quicker to make. It has just three ingredients—nonfat plain yogurt, ripe bananas, and frozen blueberries. Two of those ingredients are superfoods, and the other one is packed with protein and healthy probiotics. Don't have frozen blueberries on hand? Feel free to swap the same amount of another type of frozen berry or fruit. And be sure to use a ripe banana for added sweetness.

Our recipe yields two smoothies, so you can make sure you and your partner start the day well or your kids have a healthy after-school snack.

Smooth Smoothie Making

It's important to combine ingredients in the correct order when making a smoothie. Adding them in the wrong order can cause frozen fruit and ice to get caught in the blender's blades. Start by adding yogurt or the base liquid (dairy or non-dairy milk, water, or juice) to the blender. Next, add smaller ingredients, like diced fruit or blueberries, and finish by adding larger pieces of fruit like whole strawberries. If your smoothie recipe includes ice, add the cubes last. Adding the ingredients in this order makes for smoother blending and less likelihood of your blender clogging.

Are bananas and blueberries good together?

Yes! Bananas and blueberries are a wonderful combination. In addition to using them together for one of our favorite smoothies, we love the combination for muffins, fruit kebabs, popsicles, and to top oatmeal.

What is the best liquid to put in smoothies?

There are a lot of options for the liquid component of a smoothie. What is best depends mostly on your personal preference, the flavor of the liquid and how it complements the other ingredients of the smoothie, and the thickness or thinness of the liquid. If you’re using all frozen fruit, a thinner liquid would be better than a thicker one.

Popular choices for the liquid base of a smoothie include: milk, non-dairy milk, Greek yogurt, regular yogurt, kefir, coconut milk, coconut water, juice, herbal tea, and water.
