What to Look for When You Shop

Before purchasing a cooling comforter, there are some factors to consider that will ensure the bedding lives up to its claims.

Moisture-wicking materials: Choose a comforter constructed from moisture-wicking materials, which removes sweat from your skin and brings it to the outer surface of the material. "For hot sleepers or those living in hot or humid climates, we like to recommend linen, cotton, or bamboo," says Tom Ryan, product expert at Sleep Foundation. "Each of these fabrics are light, breathable, and can wick away moisture."
Weight: Most brands make different weights—also known as fill power—for comforters. "If you're a hot sleeper, look for a comforter with lower fill power (around 700 or less) or something that is generally lighter weight," says Ryan. "You'll want to make sure the comforter isn't packed too tightly with material, which will make it more breathable throughout the night."
Fill type: Down alternative is an ideal comforter fill if you are a hot sleeper. "Down alternative are meant to mimic the feel of down, but they use synthetic materials like polyester or microfiber," says Ryan. Also look for comforters filled with cotton, as it tends to trap less heat.
