You don't have to enroll in a class to get the thrill of freshly sharpened pencils and pristine paper. After all, there's reason why we still send handwritten letters, sign cards in calligraphy, and enjoy Victorian-style die-cut embellishments that are embossed and glittered for a personal touch. Here, all of these stationery shops offer what you need with honors-level style. And if you can't make it to the brick-and-mortar store, you can still stock up with some of them online.

Rugg Road Paper Company

Found in Boston's historic Beacon Hill, Rugg Road Paper Company was founded as a paper-making studio more than 30 years ago. Work with their in-house designers to create your own stationery for wedding invitations, announcements, and shower invitations or choose from a bevy of customizable stationers.

Bowne & Co. Stationers

Tucked away in the South Street Seaport Museum in New York City, this small-batch printing firm was originally founded in 1775. Bowne & Co., Inc. was once New York's oldest and largest printing firm. By the turn of the 19th century, it was one of hundreds like it in lower Manhattan—all printing the documents required to facilitate shipping, trade, and finance in the port. Today, it's a turn-of-the-century store where you can find stationery and artisanal gifts like no other.

A Paper Hat

A Paper Hat calls itself "a creative supply shop" in Maplewood, New Jersey, and packs its shelves with colorful camo notebooks, mini gel pens, and stickers that boldly fit that billing.

At Appointed, which sources American-made paper and book cloth, browse the Notebook Bar to pick cover color, ruling (lined, grid, or blank), and monogram type for a chic custom creation. They're based in Washington, D.C.

Shorthand
