One of the best ways to keep your jewelry in good shape is by storing it properly when it's not in use. Instead of tossing your rings, necklaces, and earrings into a catchall tray, keep everything neat and tangle-free in a jewelry organizer.

Rather than buying one, consider DIYing a jewelry organizer, which you can do with a surprising piece of furniture—an old chair. Whether you have a chair at home you no longer use or you find one at the thrift store, you can use its components to create two different types of jewelry organizers: a ring holder and a wall display for necklaces and earrings.

The ring holder is made from the fabric of the chair's seat, which is wrapped around rolls of felt and displayed in a repurposed picture frame. The wall organizer is assembled by removing the back of the chair from the seat and screwing hooks into it. Bonus points if you have a chair with a rattan back, which is the perfect material for holding your earrings.

Once your jewelry holders are assembled, fill them with your favorite pieces. You'll love having your shiny baubles in plain sight—where they will stay safe until their next wear.

Sander (or sandpaper)

Materials

Old chair
Wood stain
Small hooks
Old picture frame
Felt

Instructions

Remove the Seat:

Turn the chair on its side and use a screwdriver to remove the screws that are underneath the chair. Once the screws are removed, detach the seat from the chair and set aside.
Remove the Back of the Chair:

With the chair still on its side, use a saw to remove the back of the chair.
Sand the Back of the Chair:

Using a sander (or do it manually with sandpaper), sand the back of the chair until smooth. Always work with the grain of the wood when sanding.
Stain the Back of the Chair:

Wipe away any debris on the back of the chair with a dry cloth. Apply wood stain, making sure to paint in the direction of the grain for best results. Let dry.
Screw in Hooks:

Screw small hooks along the bottom of the frame for displaying necklaces.
Remove Seat Fabric:

Use a box cutter to remove the fabric from the seat you set aside earlier.
Cut the Fabric:

Place the backing of an old picture frame in the center of the fabric. Use scissors to cut enough of the fabric for you to wrap around the backing of the picture frame. (The picture frame's stand should remain exposed.)
Roll Pieces of Felt:

Roll a piece of felt and secure it closed with a hot glue gun. Repeat until you have enough rolls of felt to cover the picture frame backing. Secure each roll to the picture frame backing (the side with no stand) with a hot glue gun.
Wrap Fabric Over the Felt Rolls:

Wrap the fabric you cut out in step seven around the felt rolls. Use a ruler to push the fabric into the gaps between the felt rolls and place into the front of the picture frame to secure.
