What You'll Need
Materials
- US Ceramic wall tiles, 4¼" by 4¼", $13 for 10 sq. ft., homedepot.com
- Dishwashing liquid
- Cotton balls
- Rubbing alcohol
- Craft paint and paintbrush (Martha Stewart Crafts multisurface acrylic craft paint, in Beetle Black, $2.50 for 2 oz.; and 5-piece detailing-brush set, $10, plaidonline.com)
- Tile-setting mat (Custom Building Products SimpleMat, 10 sq. ft., $22, homedepot.com)
Instructions
-
Determine how many tiles you need for your backsplash. Wash each tile surface with dishwashing liquid; dry with a towel. Wipe each with a cotton ball dipped in rubbing alcohol; let dry.
-
Brush paint on tiles in desired patterns or lines; let dry 1 hour.
-
Arrange tiles on a baking sheet and place in a cool oven; set temperature to 350° and bake 30 minutes. Turn heat off and let tiles cool completely in oven. Let rest at least 72 hours.
-
Follow manufacturer's directions for mat. Adhere tiles tightly, without grout (which can damage painted surface of tiles). Tiles can be cleaned with gentle cleaner; never scratch or rub them.
