Four Ways to Celebrate Women's History Month This Year

Women's History Month, which takes place in March each and every year, acknowledges and celebrates the contributions women have made and continue to make to society. There's no time like the present to honor landmark moments throughout history and the modern day, including in the arts space. Here, we share four events created by female artists to attend and enjoy during Women's History Month in 2022.

Witness new ballets, which were created by women.

From March 3 to 13, the Boston Ballet, pictured above, is premiering five new pieces created by women in a show titled ChoreograpHER. Experience choreography, music, design, and visual art by Tiler Peck, a choreographer and the principal dancer at New York City Ballet; Claudia Schreier, a choreographer; Shantell Martin, a visual artist; Lia Cirio, a principal dancer and choreographer; Melissa Toogood, a dancer and choreographer; and Emma McCormick-Goodhart, a conceptual artist.

Attend the opera.

Get your tickets for The Beekeeper, a magical-realist saga by Wang Lu, the winner of the Chicago Opera Theater's Vanguard Emerging Opera Composer residency. Debuting on March 4, this 60-minute opera tells the story of a young couple, Noah and Phoebe, leaving their city after Noah inherits his grandparents' orchard. While the pair plans their future together, they grapple with house and land demands, as well as Noah's haunted memories of his last visit to the orchard from years prior.

Enjoy a musical theater performance.

Shaina Taub wrote the book, music, and lyrics for Suffs, a show about the suffragettes who fought for women's right to vote. This piece follows a group of suffragists in the seven years leading up to the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920, and spotlights their protests and conflicts with the president, fellow citizens, and one another. Catch it at New York City's Public Theater from March 10 to April 24.

Domee Shi co-wrote and directed Disney/ Pixar's latest animated film, Turning Red, which follows a 13-year-old girl, Meilin "Mei" Lee, who struggles between being a compliant child to her mother and experiencing the "chaos" of her adolescence. After having a chilling dream, she finds out that she morphs into a huge red panda when she feels strong emotions. Watch it when it hits theaters March 11.
