Knit Pillows

A great way to add texture and a touch of color to your home -- or to use up skeins and snippets of yarn left over from other projects -- these pillow covers have one knitted side and one of wool fabric.

The process is the same no matter what size pillow you make: Start by measuring the pillow insert, and then knit a piece that is one inch longer and one inch wider, and cut a piece of felted wool the same size.

What You'll Need

Materials

  • Knitting needles
  • Similarly weighted worsted wool in a variety of colors
  • Felted wool fabric
  • Sewing supplies
  • Pillow insert

Instructions

  1. Cast on enough stitches to equal the width measurement. Knit stockinette stitch, switching yarn when you want to add a stripe. Switch back, and continue knitting stockinette until piece equals the length measurement.

  2. Cast off. Weave in ends. (Block if needed.)

  3. Leaving a 1/2-inch seam allowance, sew knit piece to fabric with sewing thread, leaving a hemmed opening for pillow insert. Stuff insert inside, and slip-stitch closed. (To avoid shrinkage, dry cleaning is recommended.)
