If you're a bookworm who loves the smell and feel of physical books, but has switched over to reading primarily on an electronic reader, consider this clever upcycling craft that gives your favorite vintage book new life by turning it into a stylish tablet holder. If cutting the pages out of one of your old books feels unsettling, though, consider thrifting through an antique shop to find one that suits your style and needs.
Our tutorial will teach you how to carefully remove book pages while leaving the cover intact, line the inside of the book, and attach your favorite reading device to the inside for a chic way to protect your e-reader.
What You'll Need
Materials
- Vintage book of your choice
- Craft knife
- Measuring tape
- Decorative paper or fabric of your choice
- Adhesive
- Foam brush
- Command Strips
Instructions
-
Measure your device:
Before you select your vintage book, take a tape measure and measure your reading device. This will ensure that the book you choose can adequately cover the device.
-
Remove book pages:
Carefully cut out the pages of the vintage book with your craft knife. Make sure to leave the book covers fully intact, though.
-
Measure and cut decorative paper or fabric:
Measure the paper or fabric you'll be using to line the inside of the book cover, then cut it carefully.
-
Apply adhesive to the inside of the book cover:
With a foam brush, apply adhesive to the inside of the book covers. Then, take the paper interior liner and smooth the lining down, paying special attention to the book spine. Using a stack of books (or another source of heavy weight), apply weight to the book cover and let it dry.
-
Apply Command Strips to your device:
On the back of your reading device, apply two Command Strips (one at the top and one on the bottom). This will keep the reading device securely attached to its new cover while also making sure there's no residue when removed.
