Check Your Freezer: Several Bags of Frozen Fruit Recalled Due to Hepatitis A Risks

The bags were distributed to Costco and Walmart locations across the country.

If frozen fruit is a staple on your grocery list, you may want to check your inventory. Two different brands of frozen fruit sold at Costco and Walmart are being voluntarily recalled due to potential hepatitis A risks.

The first recall is by Wawona Frozen Foods, which is pulling year-old packages of its Organic DayBreak Blend from shelves. The fruit was distributed to Costco Wholesale stores in Arizona, California, Colorado, Utah, and Washington. It affects products sold from April 15, 2022 through June 26, 2022 with "Use By" dates: September 23, September 29, September 30, and October 18 of 2023. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has the recalled lot codes listed on its website here.

Additionally, Willamette Valley Fruit Co has announced a voluntary recall of several of its frozen fruit packages across various brands. This affects Walmart's Great Value Sliced Strawberries, Great Value Mixed Fruit, and Great Value Antioxidant Blend, which were sold nationwide. These products were sold from January 24, 2023 to June 8, 2023.

The Rader Farms Organic Fresh Start Smoothie Blend is also being recalled and was distributed to Costco Wholesale stores in Colorado, Texas, California, and Arizona. And finally, the Rader Farms Organic Berry Trio is also being pulled from shelves. This product was distributed to HEB stores in Texas from July 18, 2022 to June 8, 2023. The lot codes for the Willamette Valley Fruit Co recall can be found here.

While there have been no reported illnesses related to these specific products to date, the FDA encourages consumers to check their freezers for the recalled products and to either discard them or return them to the store for a refund. Hepatitis A is a contagious virus that can cause liver disease if left untreated. Symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, according to the FDA.
